Bitdrift has announced blob-stream, a Kafka alternative that uses stateless brokers, S3 blob storage and DynamoDB metadata to cut cross-AZ networking and operational costs. It requires accurate clocks like AWS Time Sync, supports Rust producer and consumer libraries, and targets high-volume durable streaming without Kafka's stateful broker management. The project is open source and available now.
