Cell biologist Junyue Cao argues aging is a stepwise, programmed process, not random wear and tear. His Rockefeller lab profiled 21 million mouse cells across 14 tissues and five life stages, finding discrete aging windows defined by shifts in specific cell populations. Two Science papers describe a radical redistribution of cells as mammals age, with the process likely beginning before age 30 in humans.
