The nail penetration test drives a nail or needle between 0.1 and 0.3 inches in diameter through a battery cell to simulate internal short circuits. LFP cells withstand thermal runaway at 520 to 570 degrees Fahrenheit, while NMC cells fail at 300 to 410 degrees.
