EU Watchdogs Warn Quantum Threat to Bitcoin

European financial regulators warned that advanced quantum computers could break blockchain cryptography, putting about 6.9 million Bitcoin, worth roughly $586 billion, at risk. Older or reused addresses are especially vulnerable because their public keys are already visible onchain. Bitcoin would need networkwide consensus to shift to quantum-resistant security, while the European Commission urges member states to begin post-quantum transitions by the end of 2026.
