Bristol Motor Speedway has changed its racing surface repeatedly since opening in 1961. The track ran asphalt for three decades, switched to concrete in 1992 for durability, then covered the concrete with dirt in 2021 for the Food City Dirt Race. Each swap solved problems created by the previous surface.
