V Formation Flying Explained by Vortex Model

Brown University researchers created a simulated model of V formation flight based on northern bald ibises. The model shows reduced flapping amplitude yields 11% energy savings for birds in the leader's wake. The findings apply to drone swarm aerodynamics.
