Japan's TRON project, launched at the University of Tokyo in 1984, built a hypermedia OS with custom CPU and 1.5 million character encoding. A 1989 US trade report named BTRON an unfair trade barrier, killing its desktop push. Embedded ITRON became widely deployed.
