Hacking the atmosphere: Geoengineering gets a reality check

Solar geoengineering requires aircraft that can reach 20 kilometers in the stratosphere, where air density is as low as 5% of ground level. University of Chicago researcher Jim Franke studies uncrewed planes with massive wings to carry payloads that could reflect sunlight. Current aircraft capable of such missions do not exist.
