White House drastically shortens deadline for dropping quantum-vulnerable crypto

President Trump signed Executive Order 14409 on June 22, 2026, requiring federal agencies to transition sensitive systems to post-quantum encryption by December 31, 2030, and post-quantum authentication by December 31, 2031. Federal contractors must comply with post-quantum FIPS by the end of 2030. The order updates 2024 NIST guidance that deprecated classical public key cryptography by 2030.
