Wireless Android Auto requires both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi because neither technology can do the job alone. Bluetooth handles the initial handshake and hands-free calling. Wi-Fi Direct provides the bandwidth needed for the user interface, high-quality audio, and sensor data. Older phones without 5GHz Wi-Fi support cannot run wireless Android Auto.
