A 2026 study in the Journal of Experimental Biology found sperm whales release bubbles to reduce positive buoyancy and stay suspended during vertical rests. Researchers analyzed suction-cup tag data from 42 whales off northern Norway, and all 10 modeled head-down resting whales released bubbles.
