Federal government to invest $1.9 billion to improve Via Rail fleet

Ottawa will spend $1.6 billion to replace 45 Via Rail locomotives and $357 million for a new Montreal facility. Swiss-based Stadler will build the trains, with 36 of 45 assembled in Canada. The new hybrid locomotives are expected to be North America's first.
