HS2 drops autonomous train tech to cut costs

HS2 will drop automatic train operation from Phase 1 to simplify signaling and save between £1 billion and £2.5 billion. Maximum speed falls from 360 km/h to 320 km/h. The National Audit Office warns slower journeys reduce long-term benefits by around £1.3 billion.
