On December 6, 2020, Japan's Hayabusa2 probe dropped samples from asteroid Ryugu. Its last ion engine broke down in mid-August, threatening a 2031 rendezvous with asteroid 1998 KY26. JAXA engineers will rewire Engine B's neutralizer with Engine D's ion source by late October to attempt a repair.
