University of Michigan researchers found generative AI consumes 1.4 to 180 times more energy for non-English text compared to English. Models like Alibaba's Qwen 3, Google's Gemma 3 and Meta's Llama 3.1 showed this disparity when tested on 122 languages at the 2026 EMNLP conference.
