An international team created ultra-thin films of ruthenium dioxide (RuO2) that display altermagnetism, a third fundamental category of magnetic materials. Altermagnets combine magnetic stability with electrical readability, potentially enabling faster, more compact data storage for AI. The team improved film performance by controlling crystal orientation on sapphire substrates.
