EVs can send power to the grid, but costs remain high

EV owners in California and Massachusetts can earn up to $3,000 this summer by sending power back to the grid through pilot programs. GM has 250,000 vehicles capable of grid support, representing about a gigawatt of power. The main barrier is the cost of bidirectional chargers, which can exceed $20,000 installed.
