Christian Brauner implements synchronous file closing for closerange, exec, and exit calls in the Linux 7.4 kernel. Testing on a 64 vCPU KVM guest shows a 16-21% reduction in closing time for 1M descriptors, shrinking to 4-8% with 32 or 64 processes. The Linux 7.4 stable release is expected around the end of December.
