Stripe and Tempo Launch Machine Payments Protocol

Stripe and Tempo co-authored the Machine Payments Protocol, launched on 18th March, 2026, to let AI agents pay for web services without human checkout. The spec, submitted to the IETF, uses HTTP 402 and Payment headers for Challenge, Credential and Receipt. Cloudflare reports automated systems now generate 57.5% of HTTP requests.
