RBI Rules Squeeze Proprietary Traders

Proprietary trading desks face higher funding costs starting July 1 under Reserve Bank of India rules. Banks must now collect one hundred percent collateral against all issued bank guarantees for exchanges and clearing corporations. Firms previously used these guarantees to avoid parking full cash amounts with clearing houses, but the new framework eliminates that margin relief option.
