EU regulation (EU) 2023/1670 requires user-replaceable batteries in smartphones by 2027, but iPhones are exempt. Apple's devices meet three criteria: 83% capacity after 500 cycles, 80% after 1,000 cycles, and IP67 water resistance. Nintendo's Switch 2 will have a user-replaceable battery in the EU under different rules.
