Elliptical laser beams stir molten metal for new alloys

NIST demonstrated a metal 3D printing method that stirs molten metal by sending the laser along looping elliptical paths instead of straight lines. The technique needs no new hardware and could let existing machines blend alloys that resist mixing. The team fused a dense high-entropy alloy with a lightweight titanium alloy in real time.
