Modern voice-to-voice systems borrow language model techniques and apply them to sound using discrete speech representations. A neural audio codec compresses speech into token sequences at roughly 2 kbit/s, compared to 384 kbit/s for raw PCM audio. The system can be cascaded, native, or hybrid.
