Microsoft's June 2026 security update stops Windows from honoring untrusted desktop.ini files, breaking custom folder icons. The change closes a 23-year-old Explorer vulnerability first identified as MS03-027 in 2003. Custom icons still work from trusted sources or by manually setting icon files and unblocking them.
