On 25 August 1991, 21-year-old Linus Torvalds posted to Usenet that his hobby operating system was "just a hobby, won't be big and professional like gnu." That kernel now runs roughly 90 percent of the world's cloud servers, every Android phone, most TOP500 supercomputers, and SpaceX Falcon 9 flight software.
