ECB Chief Warns Europe on AI Sovereignty

ECB President Christine Lagarde stated Europe must develop its own AI or risk being cut off, using a speech in Vienna on 14 September. She warned that reliance on foreign AI could give trade partners unprecedented leverage. Lagarde noted the US produced 59 notable AI models last year versus one each from France and the UK, and that Europe hosts only 5% of global AI computing capacity.
