Cold War Radar Could Track Arctic Sea Ice

Australian radar physicist Stuart Anderson presented research at the 2026 IEEE Radar Conference in Phoenix proposing Cold War-era over-the-horizon skywave radar to track Arctic sea ice and ships. The technique bounces high-frequency radio waves off the ionosphere, reaching up to 1,800 miles. Anderson says it could estimate ice thickness and fill gaps when satellites fail.
