Tiny robot boats build floating structures

MIT researchers built FloatForm, a swarm of 21-centimeter-square robotic boats that self-assemble into floating structures. Each robot has thrusters, sensors, and magnetic latches. The system uses decentralized coordination inspired by fire ant rafts. Eight robots assembled into shapes in experiments, with simulations scaling to 64.
