AI Agents Use 136x More Energy Than Chatbots

Researchers from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology found AI agents consume up to 136.5 times more energy per query than generative AI models. An agent running a 70-billion-parameter model uses 348.41 watt-hours per query. GPUs sit idle 54.5% of execution time. If agents handled 13.7 billion daily requests, power demand would reach 198.9 gigawatts.
