Google's SynthID watermarking system helped Snopes debunk an AI-generated image of Senator Mitch McConnell that went viral on Reddit and X. The image showed McConnell covered in tubes in a hospital bed. SynthID, launched at Google I/O 2025, is an invisible signature built into images that survives screencaptures. Gemini models include the watermark; OpenAI joined in May 2026.
