Eric Lengyel dedicated his 2019 Slug patent to the public domain on March 17, 2026, letting anyone implement the GPU text rendering technique. Slug renders glyphs directly from outlines in the fragment shader, avoiding texture atlases and per-frame tessellation. A C++20 implementation, Slughorn, is now available, offering crisp scalable text without baked bitmaps.
