Ransomware groups care about brand reputation too

Max Smeets of Virtual Rotes presented at Black Hat Europe 2025 on LockBit's ransomware-as-a-service operations. Between 2022-2024, LockBit had 194 affiliates, with 110 reaching negotiation and 80 getting paid. Research showed media coverage is greater for companies that pay ransoms than those that don't.
