Hybrids made up a quarter of new UK cars in 2025. Plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) emitting 50g/km or less fall into 7% or 10% Benefit-in-Kind tax bands, far below the 25% for self-charging hybrids. From April 2028, all PHEVs under 51g/km move to an 18% band, nearly doubling tax costs.
