China may adopt US AI path as Tencent hires OpenAI researcher

Tencent hired former OpenAI researcher Yao Shunyu as chief AI scientist, who aims to build artificial general intelligence in China. Chinese AI firms, previously focused on applications due to US chip controls, are increasingly adopting the US vision for AGI as they poach Silicon Valley talent. Yao said the path forward involves smaller AI models with consistent performance on basic tasks.
