A $25 TP-Link TL-SG108E 8-port managed switch, bought as a stopgap, became the backbone of a home lab network. 802.1Q VLAN support isolates lab traffic from trusted devices. Port mirroring, IGMP snooping, QoS, and cable diagnostics are included. The gigabit speed now bottlenecks 2.5 GbE-capable devices and a 2.5 Gbps ISP uplink.
