US pays SandboxAQ $500M to break China's chip grip

The Department of Commerce awarded SandboxAQ $500 million under the CHIPS Act to develop new chip materials. The government takes a minority, non-voting equity stake and future royalties. SandboxAQ will target PFAS substitutes, catalysts, rare-earth-free magnets, and lithium-free batteries. No new materials exist yet.
