W engines arrange cylinders in three or four banks, dating back to the Anzani W3 in the early 1900s. Volkswagen AG evolved the design from VR6 engines, using two VR blocks on one crankshaft. W8, W12, and W16 engines appear in Audis, VWs, Bentleys, and Bugattis, with a W10 recently in the BMW M5.
