Intel's discontinued Optane drives still outperform modern NVMe SSDs in 4K random reads, with the 32GB module over three times faster than a Samsung 990 Pro. Optane's phase-change memory overwrites in place, avoiding NAND's cache and garbage collection overhead. The P5800X boasted sub-6 microsecond random reads.
