A 2025 survey of 3,242 internet users found 84% never updated router firmware and 81% never changed default passwords. The FBI warns criminals target end-of-life routers, with TheMoon malware hijacking devices for proxy networks. Auto-updating mesh routers now mitigate this for newer hardware.
