UN demands AI companies disclose environmental costs

The United Nations launched an AI Environmental Transparency Initiative urging AI companies to publicly disclose water usage, carbon emissions, and land use. UN Secretary-General António Guterres warned that by 2030, AI data centers could consume more power than all but five countries and enough water to meet basic needs of sub-Saharan Africa for a year.
