California exempts Linux from age-verification law

California's legislature passed Assembly Bill 1856, exempting open-source operating systems from the Digital Age Assurance Act before it takes effect January 1, 2027. The Senate passed the amended bill 39-0 on August 26, with the Assembly concurring the next day. Software under GPL, MIT, BSD, and Apache licenses is exempt.
