Raspberry Pi Firmware Blocks RAM Upgrades

Raspberry Pi firmware since around 2024 locks supported RAM size and module, so upgraded or repaired boards may not boot or see extra memory. Jeff Geerling highlighted the issue, which stems from a code identifying model, RAM size and manufacturer. An older EEPROM image works around it, but critics say it undermines the board's open hardware reputation.
