PlanetScale built on Vitess to scale Temporal workflows through horizontal sharding. Vitess creates the illusion of a single MySQL database across multiple shards. The VTGate layer transparently routes queries. Sharding uses keyspace ID ranges with a Primary Vindex, enabling resharding without application changes.
