Mini lab detects disease markers in minutes

Researchers at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign built the VPodDuo, a pocket-sized fluorescence reader the size of an AirPods case. It detects genetic material from Zika virus, HIV, and lung cancer biomarkers in about 10 minutes. Bluetooth sends results to a smartphone. The device uses photodetectors instead of cameras and tests samples against a negative control simultaneously.
