Why Africa's electric mobility is no longer a venture bet

African electric mobility startups have raised $1.28 billion since 2019, with a third now coming as debt from lenders rather than venture investors. The African Development Bank is developing the Green Mobility Facility for Africa to mobilize over $300 million in blended finance. The sector raised $313 million in the first half of 2026 alone.
