Engineers created a surface acoustic wave phonon laser that generates controlled vibrations on a microchip scale. The device could enable smaller, faster, and more energy efficient chips for smartphones and wireless electronics. Research led by Matt Eichenfield at CU Boulder was published Jan. 14 in Nature.
