A developer released rat, a small compiler backend with a C99 frontend, on October 7th, 2026. The tool features a new priority bin-packing allocator written in 584 lines, replacing the previous linear scan version which had grown to 1392 lines. This update generates better x86-64 code by mapping virtual registers to physical registers or stack slots based on importance.
