Why we chose NanoIDs for PlanetScale's API

PlanetScale's API uses 12-character NanoIDs instead of UUIDs to keep URLs short and copyable. UUIDs like 7cb776c5-8c12-4b1a-84aa-9941b815d873 break into multiple words when double-clicked. NanoIDs with a 36-character alphabet give a 1% collision probability over 35 years at 1,000 IDs per hour.
