PSSA, a recurrent state-space language model written from scratch in Rust with no ML framework, beat a matched transformer on WikiText-103. Over 12.7M tokens it reached 3.98 training cross-entropy versus 4.43, and generated text about twelve times faster on CPU. Both are 1.5M-parameter prototypes, not production systems.
