The Xfce project is funding longtime developer Brian Tarricone to build xfwl4, a new Wayland compositor written from scratch in Rust using the smithay library. The compositor targets Xfce 4.22 and will ship alongside the existing xfwm4 for X11. GNOME 50 and KDE Plasma 6.8 have already dropped X11 sessions.
